It’s finally here. The blazing heat is gone, and dry yellow leaves have shed from the trees. It’s winter, the season of holidays, that great time of the year when bitter cold winds blow and snow majestically falls. It brings so many possibilities, especially for leather product owners. Leather products are used all over the year but they get preferential treatment when those cold months come along. You might think that caring for leather products is a nightmare, but it doesn’t have to be. Keep reading for some tips which can make your life easier and stop you worrying about all those leather bags, coats, shoes and belts!

1) Start Cleaning and Moisturizing

The main factor in maintaining leather is ensuring that it gets ample moisture. Don’t leave your leather in the closest, clean it periodically. Just remember to use a damp cloth!

2) Leather Oil and Cracks

Some men get paranoid when they see cracks appearing in their leather products. Don’t worry, this will happen in the winter when the leather dries out. To fix it, just take some leather oil and brush it over the cracks. Then sit back, relax and wait for the magic to happen.

3) Keep it Dry!

We told you to moisturize your leather but you need to be careful. Don’t take this point too literally. Moisturizing your leather accessories means applying a little moisture to them, not dunking them in a bucket of water or dragging it through a pond.  Keep them dry if you want them to last.

4) Beware of Extreme Weathers

Leather is very susceptible to extreme weathers. If you live in a place where your mustache freezes due to the cold, then don’t take your leather out into the open too often.

5) Know Thy Leather

Know thy leather to stay out of trouble. There are many types of leather: Nubuck, Suede, Leather Faux and original leather. Each of them is different and must be cared for differently. Suede withers away like autumn leaves if exposed to water. So be wary!

6) Leather Needs to Breath

Hang your leather products, don’t fold them or put stuff on top of them. This causes the leather to tear off the product itself. Don’t store your leather products in damp places. It needs to breathe. Keep your leather coats and bags in a closest with a window, and tend to it regularly. You want to keep them away from dust and extreme moisture while making sure that they get air. It’s a tricky line to walk along but it’s important if you want your leathers to survive through the winter!

7) Don’t rub that leather

A designer who prepares debonair leather products has warned people about rubbing leather. When you have to clean your leather, be gentle and don’t add pressure. The harder you rub, the more your leather will suffer!

It doesn’t matter if you own a Hermes handbag or leather shoes you bought from the street. Leather will last, if you let it breathe and keep it adequately moisturized!
