Golf was and is still referred to as the gentlemen’s sport because it was only played by the wealthy upper class until the 1900s. Once the sport was popularized and social barriers broke down, middle class men and women also started enjoying the sport.
In the business world, golf is played by all men and women alike, especially in Canada because membership is considerably cheaper than other countries. This poses a special networking opportunity that enable people to portray their unique personalities and social skills rather than their CV. Making many of these unconventional connections may lead to further career development because of various reasons. First, one might meet employees at a firm that they wish to work at in the future. Secondly, developing a stronger relationship with co-workers outside of the workplace can help one feel more confident and inclusive that can lead to better performance professionally.
However, some disagree with this idea, stating that golf is a thing of the past. The face of the corporate world is changing as the new millennials account for the majority of the workforce. The Generation Y are less receptive to tasks that need patience, therefore the golf industry is unable to attract youth who have a wide range of leisure activities to choose from. In addition, it’s not only the youth that are turning down golfing, but also executives who do not have the time to invest 5 hours for 18-rounds of golf. Professionals are too hungry and work-driven to spend time relaxing at a golf course, and much rather network over social media platforms such as LinkedIn.
Can golf help your career? Yes. Any kind of networking event can be found useful later down the road. However, it isn’t a critical career-enhancing and network activity that everyone thought it once was.
This doesn’t mean golf isn’t still one of the most popular sports in the world! It teaches people patience and the virtue of perseverance, so why don’t you take advantage of the great weather we’ve been having in Toronto and planning a golfing trip with your family, friends, or co-workers.
