Keep It Simple Stupid – The age-old KISS rule. How is it that the simplest things in life have become the most complicated to manage today? A simple conversation with your friend now involves the telephone, social media, Skype, texting and 20 acronyms (SMH…). Shopping for a loaf of bread today means choosing among white, whole wheat, multi-grain, rye, whole grain and the list goes on.

How about the closet? Yes, that thing in every house which stores your clothes, bags, shoes, delicates, hats, scarves and your deepest darkest secrets! How many times have you emptied out your wardrobe only to put it back in 4 hours later? Here are 5 ways you can organize your closet, optimize space, and simplify your life:

1. Get Rid of the Unwanted and Unnecessary: There is absolutely no reason for you to hang on to that top two sizes too small, hoping you will eventually fit into it (unless it holds sentimental value and no, memories of a thinner you don’t count!) Throw them out, or better, just donate it to your favorite charity.

2. Categorize Your Wardrobe: Divide your clothes into broad categories; tops, pants, skirts, dresses, sweaters, leggings, delicates and others. Now group each category by season, color, length or frequency of wear.

3. Organize Your Wardrobe: Try and hang whatever you can; this will save space. Hang your work clothes separately to help you get ready quicker in the mornings. Heavier clothes that need to maintain shape like sweaters should be folded. You can even fold your workout clothes, since they don’t need as much upkeep.

4. Invest in a Few Racks, Drawers, Baskets: Stack racks over each other at the bottom of your closet to make room for your shoes. Use the baskets for your miscellaneous items – socks, scarves, belts. Don’t forget to keep your most regularly used items in front.

5. Revisit Every Few Months: Don’t ignore your closet once you have cleaned it out. Revisit it every few months, preferably every winter or fall. This will help you bring out the clothes you need each season and clean out old ones simultaneously.

*Bonus* The Closet Trick: Keep all hangers facing the same direction. With every wear, turn out the hanger in the opposite direction. In six months, voila! You know which clothes you wear often and which don’t deserve that precious closet space – throw or donate.
