The 2015 Pan Am and Parapan Am Games are being held in Toronto, the first time for the city. However, it is the third time being held in Canada, becoming the most frequent host nation for the Pan Am Games along with Mexico. So how were the previous Canadian Pan am Games like?

Before international competitions were fully established for sporting events, nations looked forward to events like Olympics and Pan – American Games to showcase their best athletes and their capabilities in their respective sport. It was a platform by which countries communicated to the world that they were the best.

1967 Pan – American Games

The fifth Pan – American Games was held in Winnipeg, Canada; the first international multi-sporting held by Canada. The opening ceremony was held on July 23rd and lasted two weeks, closing on August 6th. It featured 169 events, 2361 athletes from 29 countries.

Although the games were only held for two weeks, it had a lasting effect for the community of Manitoba. Notably, the stadium used by the University of Manitoba was built for the 1967 Pan – American Games.

1999 Pan – American Games

The thirteenth Pan Am Games was also held in Winnipeg, most likely because Montreal and Calgary held the Summer and Winter Olympics previously. Sporting events like the Olympics and Pan – Am Games are great ways to boost the economy of the city. Hosting these events creates jobs, tourists, publicity, and revenue. Similar to the 1967 games, it was held from July 23rd to August 6th for two weeks. However, there were more events and athletes present, about 5000 athletes from 42 countries competed in 330 events.
