The article highlights a study from The New York City Department of Consumer Affairs that found that when “Controlling for quality, items marketed to girls and women cost an average 7% more than similar products aimed at boys and men.” And the injustice doesn’t stop there. Add in the wage gap (in the United States, women make approximately $0.79 for every $1.00 men make) and women are definitely at a distinct disadvantage.
Hair products (48% more), haircuts (25% more), and razors (11% more) topped the list as some of the more egregious discrepancies, along with one that particularly concerned us – in 2002, women paid 27% more than men for the laundering of a white cotton shirt. Unfortunately, this is not a practice that Toronto is immune to – many local area dry cleaners upcharge female clients for gender-specific items such as blouses, skirts and dresses.
